The Linden municipality has commenced demolition of roadside stalls along Burnham Drive, in an effort to get the vendors off the road and into the nearby Wismar Market, which presently has less than 50 per cent occupancy.
According to senior officials of the Council, the vendors were given adequate notice to relocate to the market, but chose to ignore those notices, leaving the Council with no alternative than to proceed to demolish the structures.
Chairman of the Interim Management Committee, Orrin Gordon, had pointed out that it was imperative that the roadside shops be removed to facilitate urgent rehabilitation of one of the kokers located on Burnham Drive. Work is being hindered because of some of these structures, which are in the way.
Stallholders in the Wismar Market have been calling on the relevant authorities for some time now to have the vendors on Burnham Drive relocated to the market, saying that the low occupancy rate of the market impacts negatively on sales there.
People hardly go into the market because of the vendors on the road selling the same items they said.
One market vendor opined, “If these people (vendors) come into the market, more people are going to come to shop in the market; but when they’re out there offering the same items we have here, is blows!”
Another vendor had pointed out that considerable work needs to be done to the outer perimeters of the market, to make it attractive so that people would be persuaded to go and shop there.
Adequate lighting and parking facilities were other suggestions that were made to boost the “image” of the market.
The roadside vendors, meanwhile, have said that they have no problem with going in the Wismar Market, but posited that the Council could at least have extended their time to January next year.
But Council officials would have none of that, and said that the only vendors that would be left on the road for now would be the vegetable and ground provision vendors, and those who sell alcoholic beverages.
According to reports, Council is at present in the process of setting up appropriate vending stalls in front of the market for the former, while looking at alternative arrangements for the latter, as no alcoholic vending will be allowed in the market. (Enid Joaquin)
