Nov 21, 2008 Letters
Dear Editor,
Through the media of the television and the news print, the nation was told that agreement to revert to the old fare structure will come into effect from 7th November, 2008.
The nation was further told that this was as a result of the reduced fuel price, and that such agreement was sanctioned by the Minibus Association and the Public Transport Association in discussions with the Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry.
However, many bus operators have blatantly refused to comply with this arrangement, and have demonstrated an open defiance to this decision.
It is very disgusting that Minister Manniram Prashad is not making a specific pronouncement on efforts which are envisaged to solve this burning issue and satisfy the bewildered commuters.
Is it that commuters are now exposed to the practice of “caveat emptor,” that is, where they are left to the whims and fancies of the providers of services and goods, or does consumer protection have no place in our marketing structure?
The underlying concept is that members of the elected PPP/C Government are there to represent the nation in matters of public interest. Minister Manniram Prashad is therefore urged to use the functional operations of his ministry and resolve this controversial issue.
Minibus operators and hire car owners are claiming that market prices of goods and services remain the same. This is totally baseless, as commuters also have to face the said market prices.
The appropriately considered issue in this matter is the reduced operation cost of transport services as a result of reduced gasoline price.
As an alternative, let the minister solicit the Public Utilities Commission to intercede and settle this aggravating concern.
Let this issue be also given focus. In the fare increase earlier in this year, bus operators of the No.1Canal to Georgetown route unilaterally imposed an increase of $40, instead of $20, quite distinct from others, who increased by a mere $20. Please bear this in mind with fare adjustment, and let all fare structures be publicly and officially declared.
