Guyana, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydrometeorological Service, will on Thursday host the 48th Session of the Caribbean Meteorological Council of Ministers and related meetings.
The Caribbean Meteorological Council is the governing body of this organisation. It meets yearly to define policy for the Caribbean Meteorological Organisation and the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology.
Ministers with responsibility for meteorological services in their respective countries make up the membership of the Caribbean Meteorological Council.
Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud will be chairing the Caribbean Meteorological Council of Ministers’ meeting.
There will also be a special meeting of Directors of Meteorological Services, hosted during the five-day session.
Heads of meteorological departments across the Caribbean will be attending this meeting, held annually
The Board of Governors of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) will also have its special meeting here in Guyana.
The members of the body are directors of the meteorological services or Permanent Secretaries who have the responsibility of meteorological departments within the region.
The board consists of member states from Caribbean Meteorological Organisation. Guyana is a member, and Dr. Dindyal Permaul, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, represents Guyana on this board.
The Caribbean Meteorological Organisation was formed in 1973 by 16 Caribbean countries, including Guyana.
As weather and climate know no national boundaries, it is recognized that cooperation at the regional and international levels is vital for the development of meteorology and operational hydrology, so as to reap the benefits from their applications.
The Caribbean Meteorological Organisation provides the framework for such regional and international cooperation.
The Caribbean Meteorological Organisation is also the implementing agency for the Doppler weather radar regional project.
The purpose of these meetings is to promote and coordinate regional activities in the field of meteorology and operational hydrology.
The governance structure of the Caribbean Meteorological Organization and the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, as well as crucial operational matters, are also discussed and adjudicated at these meetings.
