The Accounts staff of the Ministry of Agriculture who were relocated to the Hydrometeorological Office in Brickdam have returned to the Ministry of Agriculture building. This newspaper was told that the workers returned to their office yesterday.
Since last week Monday, the workers were relocated after there were reports that asbestos was being removed from their office.
And the report that the staff was ordered to hand over works to private contract workers was false, according to an official of the ministry.
The people to whom the staff were ordered to hand over their work were actually members of the very ministry. However, that order has been rescinded.
Initial reports had stated that, on Tuesday, the workers were ordered to hand over the work by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Agriculture Ministry. Workers had told this newspaper that the order reportedly came after they were accused of not working efficiently.
Ever since, the workers have been in contact with the Guyana Public Service Union, which had stated that it was monitoring the situation.
According to a report from the Labour, Occupational Safety and Health Department, the office has been deemed safe for the workers to return.
The reports stated that the construction workers advised the inspector from the ministry that no asbestos was removed from the building. Further, the report stated, no asbestos was found in the building.
