United States Ambassador to Guyana, John Melvin Jones, paid a courtesy call on Tuesday last to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally.
During the visit, the discussions were focused particularly on several future long, medium and short-term activities of GECOM.
These included the implementation of the renewed cycle of continuous registration, GECOM’s preparations for the conduct of local government elections, the immediate assistance for the implementation of the fingerprint cross-matching exercise which would further enhance the integrity of the national register of registrants and the final voters’ list.
They both spoke about the recommendations which were made by the foreign and local observer groups which monitored the 2006 general and regional elections, and also said that they would be looking at the recommendations that were reported from the commission and its secretariat.
Both the ambassador and the chairman noted that they would focus on continued assistance from the International Development Partners who are relevant to strengthening the capacity of GECOM to honour its mandate, and also to bring about the realization of any necessary reforms which would allow the commission to optimally carry out its functions in an atmosphere of minimal interference and impediment.
And on a lighter note, the two shared amicable views pertaining to the recently concluded U.S. elections, at which Dr. Surujbally participated as an observer from the USAID-Guyana office.
