The authorities in the police East Coast Demerara division plan to ensure that more than 100 ranks will be on the road to police the district during the Christmas period.
Divisional Commander Balram Persaud, in the presentation of his Christmas security plan for the East Coast, stressed that he will be focusing on the high activity areas, including the several GuySuCo pay offices in the district.
Persaud acknowledged that, like all other areas, there are expected to be increased monetary transactions and road traffic at this time of the year, hence the East Coast division is preparing to deal with any attempt by criminal elements to increase their activities.
“We intend to minimise incidents of criminal activity, minimize traffic accidents and congestion, and to foster closer relations with members of the public,” the Commander stated in his presentation.
To facilitate the task at hand, the Divisional Commander has divided the district under his watch into three sectors.
Sector one will be from Good Hope to Greenfield, sector two will take in Conversation Tree and Mon Repos, while sector three will be from Unity to the Abary Bridge.
Throughout these sectors, there will be foot patrols, both beat and traffic; mobile patrols, which will focus on crime control and response; road blocks, raids and searches.
Already, police in the division have carried out raids in some of the villages, and these will be repeated on an indefinite basis.
Special emphasis will be placed on patrolling certain areas on their particular market days, as well as the main shopping areas.
Pay offices at La Bonne Intention, Better Hope, Enmore, Enterprise and Lusignan will be strictly monitored by the police, as well as crime-prone areas such as Sophia, Cummings Lodge, Plaisance, Beterverwagting, Triumph, Mon Repos, Buxton, Melanie Damishana, Non Pareil, Bare Root, Paradise and Haslington, Persaud assured.
This is in addition to regular traffic patrol presence in areas where accidents are more likely to occur, like Good Hope, Lusignan-Annandale and Hope-Greenfield.
The police will be adequately backed up by members of the various community policing groups in the division.
To this end, there will be minimum staff in the police offices to deal with expeditious matters.
