Play in the Mabaruma Inter-Block football tournament got underway yesterday with a victory for Mabaruma Compound over Mabaruma Settlement.
Midfielder Troy Willis fired home the winner in the 20th minute of play to secure his team’s triumph.
The programme was opened by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, who is the sponsor and organiser for this event, Steve Ninvalle. This is the 14th such activity to have been organised and staged by the ministry.
Ninvalle challenged the youths to keep focused on the sport because once they have the willpower they will achieve great heights in the discipline and also it will aid them to channel their energies constructively and stay away from unwanted influences.
Ministry coach Dennis Chow Hunte has been in the area conducting sessions over the past two days and the programme has attracted 40 youths each day.
Today Ninvalle and Hunte travel to Wauna where two more games will be staged in the competition, which will climax on Sunday with the final.
Meanwhile, on Friday they ministry team will travel to Port Kaituma, some 65 miles from Mabaruma by boat for a similar activity as they canvas the Region 1 area.
