…milling company refutes claims
Some bakers have complained that they are receiving from the National Milling Company (NAMILCO) flour which they say is not of ‘high quality.’
During a meeting with Commerce Minister Manniram Prashad yesterday, a representative from Pearl’s Bakery noted that the flour that bakery gets from the milling company is not ‘good.’
“Sometimes you can’t use the flour.”
He explained that when this happens, Pearl’s Bakery would have to resort to buying flour from Trinidad at a higher price.
The bakery representative noted that, on many occasions, he would relate his concerns to the flour company, but nothing is done about the situation. He explained that the flour received from the company would not be able to make the tennis rolls.
However, the bakery’s claim was rejected by NAMILCO.
According to Managing Director of NAMILCO, Bert Sukhai, Pearl’s Bakery is the only bakery which has expressed concerns about the quality of the flour, since no other bakery has complained about the flour they receive, which is the same as Pearl’s Bakery.
Sukhai told Kaieteur News yesterday that the reason why the bakery is still experiencing problems with the flour is simply because it has refused to bake the tennis rolls in the way it was recommended by NAMILCO.
Sukhai admitted that the company cannot please everyone, but he noted that NAMILCO tries to do whatever it can to assist bakers whenever they encounter a problem, and tries to satisfy them in every way possible.
Currently, the flour company is engaged in making new formulations for the bakery, so that the problem being experienced can be eliminated.
“We are trying to work with the bakery in every way we can. Every baker has different methods and ways in which they do things, and we are doing our best to assist in this particular situation,” Sukhai said.
He added that there should be no question about the quality of wheat being bought by NAMILCO, as the company has the best quality of wheat on the market.
Chief Executive Officer of Bakewell, Naeem Nazir, expressed similar sentiments to Sukhai’s, as he noted that the flour company is quiet responsive to bakers whenever they experience problems.
However, Nazir did acknowledge that there would be problems at times with the quality of flour from NAMILCO, but he noted that the company would always try to fix it.
Only on Tuesday last did the flour company receive a shipment of wheat from Canada; and in this regard, Nazir said, the quality of flour would not be expected to pose a problem any longer, since Canada is known to have the best wheat in the world.
