Lack of preparation also continue to affect Islanders
By Sean Devers
Manager of the Windward Islands cricket team former first-class batsman Lockhart Sebastian feels his team, which is currently participating in the regional one-day cricket series in Guyana, has been affected by fixtures and a continued lack of preparation.
The Windward Islands have won the regional title on only two occasions with the last being eight years ago and the 53-year-old Dominican, who scored five tons and averaged 32.89 from 92 first-class matches, lamented that the Windwards is the only team in the nine-team President’s Cup tournament that will not play either of North American teams.
“We are the only team that has not been given a match against Canada or the USA which are the two weakest teams in the competition and I feel this is very unfair to us since it seems we are not playing on a level playing field.
Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica have gotten matches against both USA and Canada which means that they can get 12 points from two matches since if you play well you should take the maximum two bonus points from those teams,” Sebastian said.
The Windwards who lost their penultimate preliminary round game to Barbados yesterday take on the Leewards in their final match and no longer can qualify for the final four.
Sebastian, whose highest first-class score is 219, explained that it was planned for the Windwards to have a one-week camp in Guyana ahead of the competition and like they did a few seasons ago, play practice games on South American soil before the actual tournament.
But Sebastian said those plans fell through because of various reasons including flight problems and team ended up coming to Guyana in parts with the last few players arriving the night before the tournament commenced on November 13.
Sebastian said that his team has several young talented players but opined that if more is not done to properly develop the talent in the Windward Islands, the team will continue to disappoint.
“We come from four different Islands and it is not easy getting together just days before major tournaments without little or no preparation as a team,” Sebastian, whose son Liam is one of the leading players in the Windwards’ team.
The Windwards Manager said that his team is very satisfied with the grounds, transpiration and hotel accommodation in Guyana and feels the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has done a good job so far.
