Miner saw plane, heard explosion in Kurupung

An official from the uranium mining company, Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc., disclosed yesterday that its team is conducting ground searches in a section of Kurupung where a Brazilian miner had heard an explosion after seeing a plane flying in the area.
Prometheus official Shazadh Khan told Kaieteur News that this information was received about a week ago.
The search party organized by the uranium firm has been checking this area for about four days.
Khan estimated that the possible crash site is some eight to ten kilometers from the area where the twin-engine aircraft was scheduled to fly.
Minister of Transport, Works and Communication, Robeson Benn had indicated on Monday that the search team had received some other information about the missing plane and crew, but had not elaborated.
This was disclosed during a press conference in which Benn revealed that he was calling off the two-week search for the U.S. aircraft and its three passengers, who are now presumed dead.
But Khan had told Kaieteur News that Prometheus would continue its own search for a month in an effort to bring out “whatever we find”.
He also said that more sophisticated equipment might be brought in by the Johns Hopkins University in an effort to detect the crash site.
“It is a new technology for imaging objects below the (forest) canopy. It is in its research and development stage.”
Prometheus Resources Guyana. Inc. is a subsidiary of U308 Corporation of Toronto, Canada.
Speaking to Kaieteur News yesterday from Canada, Nancy Chan-Palmateer, U308 Corporation’s Vice President of Investor Relations, also said that the search would continue for the following weeks.
“It is very distressing, obviously, but we can’t speculate on what happened. Our efforts are on the search to collect (find) the three passengers.
Despite the tragedy, Palmateer said that the Canadian firm had no intention of pulling out of Guyana.
“We are very committed to exploration in Guyana. We have been in Guyana for three years now and we are committed to following through.”
Shazadh Khan said that the company has enough data from previous surveys, which it will analyse for the next few months.
During his press conference, Minister Robeson Benn stated that the search and rescue team had done everything possible to locate the victims.
A statement released to journalists described the search as “the longest and most intense” for a missing aircraft over the last 20 years.
Benn said that there were 200 hours of aerial searches that covered some 28,260 miles.
The Beech King Air N87V, chartered from Dynamic Aviation Group Inc by Terraques Ltd, disappeared on November 1 while conducting geographical surveys in the Mazaruni area.
Missing and presumed dead are pilot James Barker, First Officer Chris Paris, and Canadian technician Patrick Murphy.
