Waterlogged outfield reduced match to 27 overs By Franklin Wilson
The Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) posted their second win in as many matches when they defeated the United States of America (USA) by six wickets in their rain affected President’s Cup match yesterday at the Everest ground, Camp Road.
Overnight rain left the outfield under water during the early morning hours which resulted in the match being reduced to a 27 over a-side affair and bowled off at 13:00hrs.
The eventual starting time was as a result of excellent work by inmates of the Georgetown Prisons and the Everest ground staff who combined efforts in a massive mop up operation around the boundary areas using large pieces of sponge. Their hard work resulted in play being possible.
CCC, who went into the encounter with four points following their upset win over the Windward Islands by 68 runs on Friday last at Enmore, won the toss and invited the USA who ended this year’s competition with one point, to take first strike.
The US side never got the measure of the CCC bowling and limped to 127-8 with Dennis Evans the top scorer with 30 including two fours.
Carl Wright, who slammed 89 on Monday against Trinidad and Tobago, could not reproduce that form and departed for 14. Barrington Bartley also hit two boundaries in his 27.
The most fruitful partnership of the innings was an unbroken 9th wicket stand of 33 runs off 46 balls between Gregory Sewdial 18* and Timroy Alleyne 13*, the two coming together with the score on 94.
The USA batsmen, on the flat Everest pitch found it difficult to negotiate the spin of man-of-the-match Kavish Kantasingh who returned the enviable figures of 4-15 from his six overs with two maidens to follow up his 3-23 against the Windwards.
He received very good support from medium pacer Romel Currency, 3-20 from five probing overs, the other wicket was taken by Anderson Sealy.
Needing to score at just about five runs per over, the CCC never doubted their ability to win and achieved victory at 128-4 off 24.3 overs, Kirk Edwards 36* and Kirk Wilkinson 20* anchoring them home.
Only Craig Emmanuel (3) of the top six batsmen failed to make double figures. Romel Currency capped a fine all round display by cracking 26 (2 fours), Chad Walton chipped in with 16 and Floyd Reifer, 11.
Edwards and Wilkinson featured in an unbroken 5th wicket stand of 35 runs off 41 balls in 23 minutes.
Aditya Thyagarajan was the most successful bowler for the North Americans with 2-25 from his six overs, capping a satisfactory tournament with the ball after taking 3-29 against T&T on Monday. Timroy Alleyne and Dennis Evans took one wicket apiece.
The CCC will play their final group match against the Twin Island Republic today at GCC making the encounter a must win for both as they seek a place in the final four.
