The Guyana National Rifle Association Handgun team returned to the international scene after a long hiatus having taken part in the recently concluded Suriname Shooting Federation (SSF) IPSC event.
The local marksmen, many of whom were on their first tour to Suriname and in fact their first overseas tournament, put in a creditable performance in the face of stiff competition from their counterparts from Suriname, Barbados and St Lucia.
The event, which was held at the SSF multi purpose range in Paramaribo late last month, was conducted in nine stages with each day seeing the completion of three stages.
Guyana’s junior shooters (those competing in Suriname for the first time were grouped as junior shooters) held their own against their Caricom junior counterparts. Medal winners for the individual stages for Guyana included David Dharry with one first place (overall day one), Ryan McKinnon with a 3rd place also on Day one and Mohamed Qualander with second and third place medals and L. Luckiram with second and third place medals also.
There was also a surprise speed shoot competition at the end of the competition and this involved all forty-two competitors from the SSF shoot.
This shoot was won by Suriname in the first and second place and St Lucian Anthony Bristol third. Guyana’s M. Qualander was fourth.
The tour ended with a presentation of medals and trophies and the Guyana team, even though they did not return with any trophies, came back more experienced and having had the opportunity to shoot against some of the best in the region, this will prepare them for more overseas exposure in the coming months.
The handgun shooters are currently preparing for their yearend championship scheduled for November 30.
The GNRA would particularly like to extend their sincerest appreciation to their sponsors namely; Digicel, Cho Chin’s, Modern Optical and E&A Consultants Inc.
