Cops identify possible suspect in Piggott’s execution

Police have identified a possible suspect in the execution styled killing of trader Raphael Piggott.
According to a source, the person the police are seeking could be a key link in the investigations as detectives try to put the pieces together almost two weeks after the incident.
Detectives believe that Piggott’s death stemmed from a drug deal that went sour. Several kilograms of cocaine were found in a specially attached compartment on the fuel tank of Piggott’s car along with a large quantity of foreign currency. But there is still no clear motive for the attack.
When asked if the killing was actually an attempt to rob Piggott of the drugs and foreign currency, a top Criminal Investigations Department official could only say that it is possible.
The source said that based on investigations so far, it believed that the dead man’s reputed wife, Evanese King, and another occupant of the car, who is said to be a miner, are familiar with the gunman but have since denied any knowledge.
Two Saturday’s ago a gunman opened fire on the occupants of a car killing Piggott, the driver, in what police are describing as an execution. Piggott, of Guyhoc Park and formerly of Ituni, was shot in his upper body with a .45 calibre weapon.
Piggott was returning to the city from Berbice and had stopped at the miner’s residence when he was shot.
Eyewitnesses said that as Piggott was turning around his vehicle, a lone gunman opened fire on him, hitting him twice. Piggott tried to drive away but was so mortally wounded that the car ended up crashing into a nearby chain link fence.
One of the occupants of the car told police that he tried to control the vehicle from the back seat where he was sitting but Piggott’s foot was still on the accelerator, making his attempt futile.
Piggott was said to be familiar with many miners since he could speak different languages and would accompany them to neighbouring countries to assist them in the conduct of their business. Police had detained Piggott’s reputed wife and the other passenger in connection with the drug find. However, King, who is pregnant, took ill and had to be hospitalised.
Both King and the other man were subsequently released on bail.
