Eighty-eight Essequibo Technical Institute graduates are today better equipped with varied technical knowledge. The batch of students attended classes over the period 2006-2008.
Eighteen-year-old Budram Laldas was named as the Best Overall Graduating Student while Hellina Balram received the Best All-round Student prize.
Nadina Singh copped the best prize in computer science. Trophies were also awarded to lecturers for their performances in sport.
The Institute held its sixth annual graduation and prize giving exercise Saturday last at the entity’s auditorium.
Among those present at the graduation were senior Education Officer Mr. Krishna Sharma, Heads of Departments and Education Ministry representatives attached to secondary schools of Region Two.
The courses that were pursued by the graduates over the last two years included a Diploma in Science, which saw a 64.28 per cent pass. There were 100 per cent passes in four subject areas— Electrical Installation, Metal Machining, Carpentry and Joinery and Welding. Mechanical Fitting saw an 80 percent pass while Internal Combustion Engine got an 42.85 per cent pass.
Guest speaker, Mr. Sharma spoke of his appreciation for being a part of the occasion.
He said that graduation is not a time to only receive certificates; instead a country’s growth and the eradication of poverty are the result of a technical education.
Principal of the Essequibo Technical Institute, Denis Jaikarran, told students to be responsible, respectful and resourceful.
He strongly advised the students to read.
He said when one adopts a wide reading habit then reasoning and comprehension inevitably become a given.
