Chairman of Rugby West Indies Management Committee, Denis Dwyer, has announced the selection of the Rugby West Indies Team to participate in the XX Edition of the Punte del Este International Seven-a-Side Rugby Tournament in Uruguay on January 3 and 4, 2009.
The twelve players selected for the Punte del Este Tournament were chosen by the West Indies selectors from a short list of 24 players, first announced at the conclusion of the North American and West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) Men’s and Women’s Caribbean Championship held in the Bahamas, October 24 and 25.
Rugby West Indies will shortly announce their team to participate in the Trinidad & Tobago Enthusiasts International Sevens Tournament to take place in Trinidad and Tobago December 6 and 7.
Rugby West Indies will select a 12-Man team to participate in the International Rugby Board’s Sevens World Series in Hong Kong March 27-29, 2009.
Chairman of Selectors and Head Coach of Rugby West Indies, Joe Whipple, says that participation in the Punte del Este and Trinidad & Tobago tournaments are in preparation for the IRB Sevens World Series in Hong Kong.
He disclosed that the West Indies Team for Hong Kong will also include 2 or 3 players currently playing Premiere League Rugby in the United Kingdom as well as selection from about 5 other players still under consideration.
