Prize winners pose with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr, Frank Anthony (centre) Guyana Open men
Guyanese Imran Khan won the men’s title while Christine Sukhram retained her ladies crown at the Smirnoff Open Golf championships after two days of competition last weekend at the Lusignan Golf Course.
Khan playing off a 5 handicap, held the lead after the first round of the Men’s ‘A’ (Championship ) Flight (0-9 handicap) marred by rain and bad light on the opening day Saturday and continued his impressive form on day two Sunday to end the tournament with the best gross score of 146. He recorded a gross of 148 and net 138 over the two days of intense competition.
The second position went to another Guyanese Vijay Deo (handicap 8) (who recorded an overall gross of 154 to beat into third place former Guyana Open champion Alfred Mentore (handicap 7) who ended with 155.
Colin Ming (11 handicap) was declared winner of the men’s ‘B’ Flight (10-17 handicap) with a gross of 158 beating into second position Roger Rajkumar with 163 and Jeetendra Dhanpat third also with 163.
In the Men’s ‘C’ Flight (18-28 handicap), Jerome Khan playing off an 18 handicap was crowned champion with a best gross of 175 followed by Ayube Subhan (handicap 25) who finished with a overall gross of 191,while the third place was taken by Andre Cummings (handicap 25) who also recorded 191.
The top 10 best finishers in the men’s division were Imran Khan, Deo, Mentore, last year’s winner Jaipaul Seenanan, Mike Mangal, Colin Ming, M. Deonauth, Patrick Prashad, Dhanpat and Kasim Khan.
Christine Sukhram (handicap 8) led from start to finish in the ladies competition despite not playing to her full potential on the final day.
The reigning champion recorded a best gross of 156 to beat in to second position Rita Heikens (handicap 30) of the European Union who had a gross score of 206 with the third place being taken by Surinamese Petra Beems (handicap 18) who closed with 183.
In the individual prize category, Ming won the best overall net flight as well as all the net and gross prizes in his flight. Sukhram and Heikens shared several prizes in the ladies category, while Jerome Khan and Maurice Solomon were outstanding in their Flight.
The longest drive on day one went to Rajkumar while Arjune Munaf took the honours on day two. Nearest to the pin was won by Patrick Prashad on Day one, while Prem Ramnauth won on day two.
In the ladies category Joann Deo won the nearest to the pin prize on day one while Heikens won on day two. Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, Banks DIH Ltd. Sales and Marketing Executive Carlton Joao and President of the Lusignan Golf Club, Mel Sankies assisted in the presentation of prizes.
The tournament was sponsored by Banks DIH Ltd. through the Smirnoff Vodka brand for the third successive year.
