Berbice's Esuan Crandon collects the trophy from Basil Butcher, while Deryck Murray (centre) looks on.
Berbice held their nerves to defeat Demerara to capture the first ever Basil Butcher/Deryck Murray Inter-County 20/20 cricket match on Sunday at the Rose Hall Community Centre ground in East Canje.
The game, which was part of activities to launch the Basil Butcher Trust Fund, was organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sport club as part of its tribute to heroes programme and was sponsored by Ansa Mc Al Trading Company.
Berbice won the toss and asked Demerara to bat first in hazy conditions on an heavy outfield, which made run scoring very difficult.
However before actual start of the game, the two stalwarts rolled back the years by facing an over each as they showed glimpses of their past brilliance.
Butcher 75, played in 44 tests as an all-rounder, while Murray 65, played in 66 tests as a wicketkeeper batsman for the West Indies.
Demerara were never allowed to get on top of the situation as the Berbice bowlers held the reigns tight, the visitors losing wickets at regular interval to be 61-6 and then 76-9 eventually reaching 91-9 in their allotment of overs.
Krishna Deosarran top scoring with an unbeaten 26 (2×4), Forde 16 (2×4) and Travis Blyden 13 (1×4) were the other batsmen to reach double figures as extras contributed 11, Tyrell Tull batting at No11 was 9 not out.
Bowling for Berbice, national leg spinner Davendra Bishoo 3-12 got good supported by off spinner Balram Samaroo 2-14 and Pacer Quesi Maltay 2-19. There was one each for pacers skipper Esaun Crandon and Paul Wintz.
Berbice in their reply were off to a good start with openers Richard Ramdeen 32 (2×4, 1×6) from 43 deliveries and Delbert Hicks 11 posted 48 in 11 overs for the first wicket before Hicks went.
The host then lost wickets at 52, 72 and were 77 for 3 needing some 16 runs from 18 deliveries, but then lost Devon Clements stumped for 14 (1×4) in the 18th over.
At that stage both teams were fancying their chances for a victory, however Rajendra Lachigadoo then joined skipper Esaun Crandon and with the countdown reading 10 to get from 9 deliveries, Lachigadoo hoisted Demerara skipper, national off spinner Zaheer Mohammed for 6 over mid-wicket and then in a more spectacular fashion going on one knee to heave the next delivery out of the ground over mid-on to seal the victory for Berbice as they ended on 94-4 in 18.5 overs.
Bishoo was named-man-of-the-match by adjudicator Murray, while Berbice received $100,000 and a further $120,000 in Educational and Hygiene kits and the beautiful Butcher/Murray trophy. While Demerara receiver $50,000 and another $120,000 in Educational and Hygiene kits.
Speaking both before and after the game both Butcher and Murray express their gratitude to be part of such an auspicious occasion and said they were happy at what they saw.
They were of the hope that more clubs and organisations can follow in the foot steps of the RHTYSC in organising similar activities.
CEO/ Secretary of the club Hilbert Foster expressed his gratitude to both teams for participating and putting on a good show, also expressing thanks to both the Demerara and Berbice cricket boards for accepting the invitation and stated that the club hoped to make the occasion an annual affair.
