Dear Editor,
It is with great concern that I bring to the Central Government’s attention the lackadaisical and reluctant behaviour of the Regional Council in Region Five.
There are several issues that need to be addressed; however, the most crucial one is the deplorable state of the dam which is located on the southern side of the road in Pln. Washington, West Berbice.
This dam is the only source of ingress and egress for residents there. It has been one year since complaints and visits have been made to the regional authorities concerning our (dam) street.
It all started when a workman from MMA/ADA came and graded down the little strip of land that was built by the people who are living through that street, although he was told not to.
The grading down was done for heavy duty machines, such as tractors, to have access to the rice fields of their owners, because the other part of the dam is deteriorating.
The MMA/ADA authorities are not responding to the prevailing situation, and so they graded down our walk- way to make their work easier and waste the country’s resources.
During the dry weather we have to succumb to the flying sand, and during the rainy weather it’s worse; residents have to walk with long boots and change off on the roadside, which is disgusting bearing in mind working individuals, including teachers, are living there.
The fact is that residents built their walkway and did not complain until the unfair action was carried out.
I am pleading to the relevant authorities to respond to our need.
Concerned Resident
