Dear Editor,
On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir Inc. Humanitarian Mission, the pleasure is mine to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Honourable Minister, Ms. Priya Manickchand and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security for doing such a fantastic job in trying to pass new legislation whereby rapists may soon face life imprisonment, which I think deserves it and the definition of rape to change to take on “wider meaning” for the young citizens of Guyana.
This effort is to continue through your Ministry to assist and empower the lives of all citizens in Guyana, especially our mothers and daughters and more important the building blocks of the nation and our seniors.
I must commend you, your Ministry and President Bharrat Jagdeo, and the Government in general for embarking on such a magnificent job.
I wish that it could be tabled in the National Assembly before the end of the year and they will pass it and let us all think for a moment as leaders of our communities, if our innocent mothers, sisters and daughters become victims in the hands of these cold blooded rapists, what would our feelings be like, and with that in mind I hope they will support this legislation.
It was a pleasure and honour in meeting with the Hon Minister Ms. Priya Manickchand and members of her staff on several occasions in collaboration and support to The New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir, Inc. Humanitarian Mission outreach and charitable programmes to assist the less fortunate children and seniors in Guyana.
Against this backdrop, I am honoured to endorse the exemplary work of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security in seeking to have penalties maximized by introducing new legislation for these cold blooded rapists, who have no mercy for innocent children. I was in Guyana for three days and visited Berbice in the month of October 2008 where there were several rapes.
Ms. Priya Manickchand has become not just a spokeswoman for the government and her ministry but for the poor, the abused in domestic violence, the raped, the homeless and battered women and children in Guyana, but a voice for the voiceless and hope for the hopeless and the moral conscience for the citizens of Guyana.
It is indeed gratifying when ministries such as yours can work in the interest of the citizens and to organise and implement programmes to help benefit citizens from various regions regardless of race, colour, creed or age of our beautiful country, which allows them to have a better life.
Guyana is a multi-religious society and it is important for us to be aware and appreciative not only for our individual religious doctrine and customs, but that of others, if we are to respect each other and live in peace and harmony.
Our Children are our future, especially our daughters! They are the future ambassadors of our society. As parents, leaders, elders and even as members of the community, we have a duty to lay the fertile ground that is necessary for them to be adequately nurtured and not for these unwanted beasts in society to destroy them. In this way, we will create productive off-springs that are assets, instead of liabilities, to the society.
It is my sincere hope that your colleagues will help to pass this legislation as soon as possible and let them know that the Government will not tolerate any kind of injustice.
Pt. Suresh Sugrim
