The lieutenant who was arrested with a grenade and several rounds of ammunition on October is seconded to the Joint Services Operation Group (JSOG) and was authorised to carry that arsenal.
But when he turned up at his girlfriend’s home, he “was in the wrong place,” and is to be disciplined for his actions, Guyana Defence Force Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best told journalists during a Joint Services press briefing yesterday.
According to the Chief of Staff, the grenade and ammunition were uplifted from JSOG Headquarters.
“It’s authorised issue for defence intensity operations. Depending on where they are going, they may have a higher scale of ammunition.
“What happened in this case is that the officer misplaced himself. He was in the wrong place with that kind of ammunition, and we have him in custody and he will be disciplined.
“The kind of operations by JSOG from time to time requires certain levels of ammunition. If you receive it and then decide to proceed to your mother-in law’s residence, it says a lot about the individual, and it also says that we have to keep looking, even at the persons who are involved in our operations.”
It is alleged that the army lieutenant had turned up at the Anira Street residence of his girlfriend’s mother after the 16-year-old girl had left his home.
The woman reportedly observed that he had a grenade in his hand. The police were summoned and the rank was nabbed with the grenade and over 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The teen’s mother alleged that the army rank had threatened to burn and to bomb her home.
