Wakenaam defeated South Essequibo by 4 wickets to win the Goodwood under-19 50 overs cricket competition last Friday at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground in Good Success.
In the long awaited final which was reduced to 38 overs due to a wet pitch, Essequibo who topped zone A took first strike and soon found themselves in trouble as pacer Oyono Sampson had opener Keron Mc Lennon caught and bowled for 06 to leave the visitors at 13-1 off the first over.
Vickerd Nanadanna then joined Arjune Jagroo and the pair took the score to 43 before Nandanna was caught off left arm spinner Imran Khan for 12.
South Essequibo then suffered a dramatic collapse and were soon all out for 79 in the 21st over. Arjune top scored with 18 while Ready Mohamed (10) was the only other batsman to reach double figures as Imran Khan 4 – 22 and medium pacer Bernard Lewis 4 – 10 did the damage with the ball for Wakenaam who defeated Leguan, Bartica and East Bank Essequibo enroute to the final.
