EAT THIS: Quacy Hall (TB) un-leaches a straight left to Clebert Harding’s face but ended up losing the bout.
The future of amateur boxing that recently appeared bleak, has received a shot in the arm following several exciting bouts at the Champion of Champions, Open Juniors Cadets, U-15 and Just Starters, boxing championships, organized by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) and sponsored by Church’s Chicken, at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Friday night last.
A sparse crowd witnessed some of the best displays of amateur boxing seen in recent times and it was a pity that more fans were not on hand to enjoy what turned out to be a truly action packed card. They however can get the opportunity to see more top flight action tonight, the last night of the championships.
In what was arguably the fight of the night, Essequibian Aubrey Moore outclassed Republican Dennis Daniels to win by a technical knockout. A rangy boxer, Moore used his height and reach to full advantage delivering piston jabs and stiff straight rights. It was apparent that Daniels was out of his league. He received a barrage of punches that went unanswered as Moore demonstrated firm mastery of the uppercut, jolting Daniels’ head with every such blow delivered.
Daniels lasted for three rounds until an especially wicked right uppercut, followed by a left hook, delivered by Moore, forced the referee to call a halt to the mismatch in the 47th second of the third stanza.
The light/welterweight encounter between Republican Damien Ross and Bert Braithwaite (GDF) is also worthy of mention. Ross set off at a furious pace jolting the soldier with a barrage of vicious body shots. After one such attacks, the referee was forced to institute the mandatory 8 count over Braithwaite. The soldier decided to protect his midsection but by then Ross had switched to his head, rocking him with well timed combinations. Braithwaite resorted to a high guard but several round house punches stunned him and forced him backwards.
The stinging punches seem to have awakened Braithwaite from his lethargy and by the third stanza he started to deliver more accurate shots. It seemed as though Ross had utilized his armory of punches as he failed to respond to a late attack by Braithwaite, the concomitant result being a points decision win for the soldier.
If what was seen on Friday night is used as a yardstick, the final night should provide fans with exciting action and maybe, major upsets. The other results of Friday night’s card are:
