NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Several inmates of the New Amsterdam Male Prison attempted a daring prison break yesterday morning.
According to reports, the attempt was foiled after they were spotted by a prison officer who was at the time in the yard.
Details are somewhat sketchy, but a reliable source indicated that a group of prisoners were in a cell when one of them asked to use the toilet.
When the prison officer opened the cell, the others attacked him, took away the keys, and tied him up with a sheet.
They then proceeded to open other cells, releasing other prisoners in the process. A prison officer who was stationed at the back of the compound saw the inmates and raised the alarm.
Efforts to secure a comment from prison officials in New Amsterdam were futile.
When the Commander of Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force was contacted, he refused to disclose any information, saying inter alia, “…The police will issue a press release.”
He then extended an invitation to dinner tomorrow night.
