Nov 15, 2008 Letters
Dear Editor
Please permit me to consciously add my written contribution in your letter pages in relation to the many non-responsive and appealing letters written by Mr. Krishna Nand Prasad of Patentia Housing Scheme, on the deserted, distressed, desolate and isolated villages of West Bank Demerara.
I also refer to another appealing letter of 13. 11. 2008, seen in the Guyana Chronicle, captioned “Clogged spots along Patentia drains.”
It was heartbreaking to have read more than four letters published in the three daily newspapers by Mr. K. N. Prasad, in which he craved the attention and mercy of relevant authorities to clear and clean the internal drains of Patentia Housing Scheme.
Mr K. N. Prasad is a faithful and fruitful son of Guyana, who has committed himself as a community worker for the entire village of Bellevue, W. B. D.
I do recall, some years ago, that Mr. K. N. Prasad had voiced much of his concern on the plight and predicament of school children attending the Vive-la-Force Government School, where they had to SAIL through deep water in kneel level pot holes on the public roads, in their attempt to attend classes.
He had called on the relevant authorities to put in place measures for these students to walk on dry land with dry feet, as they wend their way to and from school in a radius of 2-kilometres on swamp roads.
Today, Mr. K. N. Prasad is once again voicing concern to the relevant authorities on the issue of massive flooding in the villages of Toevlught, Patentia, Vriesland and Free and Easy.
These warnings are, however, signally being ignored by the relevant authorities in Guyana. As a further example of the negligence that is being displayed by the relevant Guyanese authorities, I refer to recent letters in the Kaieteur News of 15. 09. 2008, captioned “I have a great plan to tackle flooding in Guyana,” and in the Guyana Chronicle of 16. 09. 2008 captioned “Eliminate breaches by use of modern technologies.”
The writer of the above mentioned articles, in his own words, confirmed that he had forewarned relevant authorities of the blockage on the right side of the tributary (mouth) of the Abary creek, caused by silted sea-foreshore brown sand.
As a consequence of such warnings, which were deliberately ignored by the Ministry of Public Works (sea defence department) and the National Drainage Board, Guyana was under siege of mass flooding.
The voice of Mr. K. N. Prasad should not have been ignored by the relevant authorities, as he is a man of high calibre and quality, and is an intellectual, being the former head-teacher of Patentia Government Secondary School, the author of a book, entitled “Dawning Days”, a University of Guyana graduate, a poet, and currently a serving civil-servant with the Government.
He must be looked upon as an “individual asset” to his community and to his country as a whole. Also, the district of Patentia should not be marginalized, ignored or deprived of attention and development.
Patentia has indeed produced “fruitful and faithful sons and daughters” such as the Hon. Frank August Campbelle, our first Ambassador to Cuba and former Minister of Information; Dr. Rovin Deodat, Mr. Ricky Singh, Mr. Gouwkaran Sukdeo (author), Mr. Nills Campbelle, a prominent journalist; Rev. Surujlall Motilall, a Dutch trained and oriented civil engineer (specialised in hydro-concrete water and civil-engineering) Mr. Andrew Garnette, a Senior Sanitary Inspector at the Georgetown abattoir on Water Street, Pastor Neville Boston, General Manager of Guyana General Motor Company, to name a few.
In the light of such a necessity and the importance of what Mr. K. N. Prasad has highlighted, I would like to join him in his attempt to gain the attention of relevant Guyanese officials on such a pertinent matter of clearing and cleaning all drains in and around residential areas.
This will result in combating a flood crisis and protecting and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of our residents in rural areas
Surujlall Motilall
