Medical doctors, primarily those who have been trained in Cuba, will now be given the privilege to specialise in a specific field of medicine through intensified collaboration between the governments of Guyana and Cuba.
The offer to allow trained medical doctors to undertake the programme in Cuba was recently proposed by the Cuban Embassy, according to Minister within the Health Ministry, Dr Bheri Ramsaran.
He pointed out that the further possibility of specialisation for the doctors will help the Health Ministry to train graduate doctors whose skills can be boosted.
“Previously Cuba was only helping us to create graduate doctors, now the embassy is offering us to train specialist doctors, such as in the area of gynaecology, eye doctors, obstetricians.”
In this regard, Minister Ramsaran said that both countries, with the assistance of the Public Service Ministry, are now in the process of selecting those persons who will be among the first batch to participate in the programme.
“Most likely doctors who were trained in the Cuban programme will be the first who will benefit from that specialisation,” Dr Ramsaran speculated.
He however noted that participants will be chosen based on certain outlined factors.
Graduate doctors will be selected once they would have served the communities they were dispatched to with distinction.
“Once they would have performed well and delivered on their contractual obligations they will be considered for this specialised training. It is not automatic, it is competitive, and is based on their commitment to their community their patients and their performance,” Dr Ramsaran noted.
With the training of the doctors, the Minister said that the local health sector will be able to gradually replace the Cubans that are currently stationed at Suddie, Leonora, Diamond and Mahaicony.
And while it is hoped that the local doctors through the programme will also be able to take over the reins of the Port Mourant Eye Care Centre, it was pointed out by Minister Ramsaran that it might be a little more difficult because eye surgery is very specialised and very technical.
Currently, one Guyanese doctor is undergoing specialist ophthalmology training in Cuba at the expense of the Guyana government.
And, according to Dr Ramsaran, the Ministry has recently been collaborating with Eye Care Guyana, a Non-Governmental Organisation which offers a specialist training programme for eye specialists, though in small amounts.
“So we are using many methods and many avenues, but the main one will remain Cuba, which offers training to the largest amount of persons and we hope now to send our graduates to become specialists, including eye specialists,” the Minister said.
