Seventy golfers including competitors from the United States, Canada and neighbouring Suriname will compete in the 2008 Smirnoff Guyana Open Golf championships billed for today and tomorrow at the Lusignan Golf Course.
Jerome Khan, Captain of the Lusignan Golf Club disclosed that Trinidad and Tobago players have opted out due to flight difficulties but the other players from North America and Suriname are here.
The Dutch team include Petra Beems, Carmeita Blankenvoort, Hanka Wolterstross, Allan Beeldsnijder, George Brahim, Marcel Chehin, Freddy Linger and Bu Young-Lee.
Tee off will be at 07:00 hours on both days to accommodate the record number of entrants. The defending men’s champion is Canadian-based Guyanese Jai Paul, while the reigning ladies champion is Christine Sukhram.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony has accepted an invitation to attend the tournament.
The tournament will be contested in three flights for men, while the ladies will be an open division.
The ‘A’ Flight (0-9 handicap), ‘B’ Flight (10-17 handicap) and ‘C’ Flight (18-28 handicap). Thirty eight prizes will be up for grabs in all the divisions.
