Mr. Klass should do the honourable thing and gracefully bow out
Dear Editor,
If the story that is being reported over the past few days in the media, concerning our senior national football team retiring from international football until President of the Guyana Football Federation Mr. Colin Klass steps down, is indeed true; then this marks an unprecedented low for football in our country, and sends the strongest message, that those who were entrusted to lead has failed.
When the best crop of our footballers are willing to retire from the sport they love; for which many of them are in the budding stage of their career, and have embraced the sport as their only means out of poverty, because according to them Mr. Klass has betrayed them, then it is only reasonable for Mr. Klass to do the honourable thing and gracefully bow out.
Over the years Mr. Klass has demonstrated how skilled he is at dodging the bullets of blame, in the process allowing it to hit and kill the careers of many of young talented players; and if indeed the players have now decided to speak up, then it is only fitting that the football fraternity and observers recognize that Mr. Klass has outlived his usefulness to the sport.
Administrators of the various affiliates to the Guyana Football Federation should now begin to pay keen attention to their members to see if the same sentiments are shared.
Over the years our national players while preparing to do battle on behalf of our country, have been chassed off of many play fields because the GFF is without there own, players have to strike before matches just to ensure obligations are kept; for sometimes better meals, better pay, and proper accommodation (remember the snake infested camp).
One may think that the embarrassment stops there, but apparently it knows no limits; in the book World Class: An Illustrated History of Caribbean Football; mentions this about Guyana, “Tempers flared in 2004 when Grenada went to play in Guyana only for there to be inadequate food provided for their players. According to the Guyana Chronicle, Granada’s manager had to go and buy bread and cheese for his team on the morning of the match”.
Four years later; Earlier in this year FIFA ruled that the GFF must repay to the Suriname Football Federation eight thousand US dollars ($8,000 US), for inadequate food among other things.
After two decades of poor performance I stand with the Guyana national football team; Mr. Klass should not be allowed to fail the next generation of footballers. The time has come for Mr. Klass to gracefully bow out.
