The first ever Basil Butcher/Deryck Murray Tribute 20/20 cricket match will be played on Sunday at the Rose Hall Estate Ground with the Butcher/Murray trophy at stake.
The match has been organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club under its ‘Tribute to Heroes Programme’ and sponsored by Ansa McAl Trading.
Apart from the trophy, the winner will also receive $100,000 in cash and 15 hygiene and educational kits, while at stake for the loser is $50,000 along with 15 hygiene and educational kits. The man-of-the-match will receive a trophy and $10,000.
Berbice will be led by national player Hoomchand Pooran while Demerara will have Zaheer Mohamed in charge.
The 75 year old Butcher played a total 44 test matches for the West Indies, while the 65 year-old Murray represented the Caribbean in 66 tests. Both of the West Indies cricketing legends will roll back the years before the match by batting six balls each.
Murray, who is in Guyana as a guest of the RHTY&SC, is the guest speaker at the official launching of the Basil Butcher Cricket Development Fund. He and Butcher will also be involved in an Evening of Stars where they will share their experiences with young cricketers.
The Berbice team for Sunday’s showdown will be chosen from, Hoomchand Pooran, Richard Ramdeen, Maxie DeJonge, Jonathan Foo, R. Lachigadu, Paul Wintz, Delbert Hicks, Devon Clements, Devendra Bishu, Kwesi Maltay, Michael Newland, Seon Hetmyer, Eugene LaFluer and Balram Samaroo. Manager is David Black and Coach Hubern Evans.
The Demerara squad: Zaheer Mohamed, Krishna Arjune, Ravi Sarwan, Kris Deosarran, Orin Forde, Travis Blyden, Trevon Carmichael, Sauid Drepaul, Troy Gonsalves, Jermaine Harris, Joseph Perry, Rayon Griffith and S. Deosarran. Manager, Ian John and Coach is Rabindranauth Seeram. Game time is 13:30hrs.
