Some 20 persons are currently involved in an intensive ground search for the missing aircraft, which had on board three persons and which has been missing for the past two weeks.
Head of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Zulficar Mohamed, told Kaieteur News last evening that the ground search has turned up empty handed, but noted that it will continue over the next two days.
He explained that the crew has reached to the bottom of the area, and as of today, the search team will be running the survey lines where the aircraft was last seen conducting its uranium survey work.
As it relates to the signal from the aircraft, Mohammed noted that a signal is still being picked up from time to time, but for yesterday, there was none.
However, he noted that officials have not been able to narrow down the signal to a location.
During the search yesterday, only one aircraft was utilized and, according to Mohammed, as the days go by, there is not much use for the aircrafts, as the area has been flown over numerous times, since the search commenced for the missing aircraft.
He explained that the aircraft that is involved in the search has a camera which has taken pictures of the area.
These pictures, he noted, will be thoroughly analyzed in the United States, where the experts there would be looking for anything unusual in the pictures, such as large pieces of metal, among other things.
When questioned about the chances of the three persons surviving, since it has been approximately two weeks since the aircraft has been presumed missing, Mohamed noted that he would not comment.
There are many persons who have survived for long periods in the jungle, he added.
Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc. official Azad Khan had told Kaieteur News that one of the aircraft involved in the search had picked up the signal as recently as Monday.
He said that the fact that the signal is being picked up might indicate that some of the crew may still be alive. Khan estimated that the crew would have long run out of food, since they would only have taken supplies for a few hours.
The twin-engine Beechcraft King Air was doing uranium survey work for Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc., a subsidiary of U308 Corp. of Toronto.
Those aboard the plane are pilot James Barker, First Officer Chris Paris and Canadian technician Patrick Murphy. Barker and Paris are American citizens.
Kaieteur News was told that the plane was flying over rough terrain when it disappeared.
An eight-year-old child had told a ground search crew that she saw the aircraft ‘falling out’ of the sky in the Chi Chi Falls area. Chi Chi Falls is an area in Imbaimadai, the place where the aircraft was last reported to be.
Mohamed had said that the child indeed saw the aircraft but it may not be that it was ‘falling out’ of the sky, since the aircraft had to do low lying surveys and the possibility highly exists that the aircraft was flying at different altitudes. (Fareeza Haniff)
