Twelve teams including defending champions Santos will battle for the top prize and attractive trophy.
At yesterday’s launch, Nestle Marketing Representative Ramdat Rampersaud congratulated the organisers indicating that they were happy to be associated with the GFA for the second straight year.
“We are hoping that this tournament will be another good one and players from this level will graduate to the higher level. Come next year we will be a part of this programme and I want to make it an annual feature for the next five, ten years. I have made representation to Nestle to have it budgeted into their AP accounts for the next five years.”
GFA president Troy Mendonca In his remarks noted that football is a very lucrative sport in the world highlighting the fact that players don’t just arrive on the scene at the senior or premier league level.
“You have to nurture them and the under-21 serve as a stepping stone and feeder into our division one and premier league divisions. It is very pleasing to know that Nestle through its brand Milo can come on board with us this year after being on board with the Supligen brand last year with our under-20 competition.”
The GFA boss said that the role Nestle, through local agents M. Beepat & Sons, is playing is very critical to the development of game in the city and Guyana as a whole.
Honorary Secretary of the GFA Marlan Cole gave an overview of the competition which will be played using the group format in the first instance with the top four teams from groups A and B advancing to the quarter-finals. A total of 67 matches will be played.
The group A teams are Guyana Defence Force, Alpha United, Thomas United, Georgetown Football Club, Pele and Rhythm Squad. Defending champions Santos, Fruta Conquerors, Beacon, Flamingo, B K International Western Tigers and Sunburst Camptown are the group B teams.
Matches will be contested at the Tucville and Camptown grounds with double headers fixed for each day, kicking off on Saturday November 22.
The winning team will walk away with $60,000 and the losing finalist, $30,000 both in cash and kind. $20,000 and $10,000 will be awarded to the third and fourth placed teams.
