Three of the members of the criminal gang, including the dead Eric ‘Eddo’ Williams, who staged the daring daylight robbery at Stanleytown, West Coast Demerara have been identified by the owner of a Rose Hall shop which was robbed on August 22, 2008, as the same men who robbed his shop of some $8 million.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, shop owner Abdool Rizam Shafeek, said that when he saw the photographs of the men on the front page of Kaieteur News, dated Friday November 7, 2008, he immediately recognised the men, as when they robbed his clothing store earlier this year they were not wearing masks.
He said that he was happy that two of them have been apprehended, and even happier that ‘Eddo’ Williams had been killed.
He added that despite the fact hat they had made off with his money and that he knew that he would not recover any of it, he was happy that he now had the peace of mind that the men would pay for their crimes against him and others.
On August 21, 2008, the three men, who were all armed with handguns, entered Shafeek’s clothing store at Lot 61 ‘A’ Rose Hall, and made off with approximately $8 million in both local and foreign currency, after holding up Shafeek’s daughter and a store employee. The bandits escaped unchallenged, and police said that they combed the area but were unsuccessful at locating the men. The three men were part of the nine-member gang that held up and robbed a GEB vehicle which was transporting the Wales GuySuCo Sugar Estate payroll, at 11:00 hours on Thursday November 6, last.
All of the nine members of the criminal gang were eventually captured, and the canister containing the $17.2 mission GuySuCo payroll was recovered.
Meanwhile, Acting Police Commissioner Henry Greene is urging persons who might have been robbed by any of the gang members to come forward to assist in finally putting the gang away for a long time.
According to Greene, now that the police are getting on top of the situation with regards to apprehending the gang members, they still need evidence to support charges that will most certainly be laid against them. Kaieteur News understands that several members of the gang have been fingered in robberies including one at Tuschen.
“People must come and give the evidence. These men must not be allowed to continue to terrorise the nation,” the Acting Commissioner told this newspaper.
