Birdwatchers impressed with numerous bird species
The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) have been actively promoting the development of birding tourism in Guyana through several initiatives and as Guyana continues to observe Tourism Awareness Month much focus is being placed on this area.

As part of a series of activities planned for this month being celebrated under the theme “Tourism is Everybody’s business”, a birding tour of the Botanical Gardens was done yesterday by ornithologists from the Guyana Tropical Birds Society.
The Botanical Gardens has a recorded 179 different species of birds, some of which are endemic to the Guiana Shield. These include the Blood-coloured Woodpecker and the Festival parrot, macaws, Limpkins and the Black-capped Donacobius. The Botanical Gardens located in the city is one among five cities in the world with such a high bird population. The group of 15 persons comprised of first time visitors to Guyana, bird lovers and hotel staff.
Participants were fascinated with the number and variety of birds found in the city and expressed their eagerness to return for such a tour.
While birding is a developing sector in Guyana and has only been introduced over the last three years, it has shown remarkable potential and has helped Guyana in gaining international attention for the over 800 species of birds that it possesses.
The Ministry, the GTA and the Guyana Trade and Investment Support (GTIS) among other organisations have collaborated to bring several familiarization tours to Guyana resulting in the country being featured prominently in over 30 international magazines. Tour companies too have been actively promoting the country and its birding sector.
A group of international tour operators are expected in Guyana on November 15 for another familiarization tour to popular birding destinations in Guyana.
