Albion defeat Rose Hall Town to claim title
Albion Sports Club are the first ever Champions of the Ansa Mc Al Trading/Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) 10/10 Cricket competition following their impressive 7-wicket win over Rose Hall Town at the Area ‘H’ Ground urged on by a massive and vociferous crowd.
Led by a solid unbeaten 31 from national under-16 all rounder Jonathan Foo, Albion posted 69-3 in 7.4 overs responding to Rose Hall Town’s 68-5 achieved off their allotted 10 overs.
Rose Hall Town (RHT) struggled to their total due to disciplined spin bowling by Albion by the champions. National player Royston Crandon was run out for 3 and Assad Fudadin perished without scoring as the home team found themselves 15-3 in the third over. Debutant Seon Crandon and Renwick Batson added 30 for the 5th wicket after Khemraj Mahadeo went for 1 with RHT at 16-4.
Batson contributed 15 while Crandon was 28 not out when the overs ran out. Ranga Lachigadu took 2-10 with his off spinners for Albion who in reply lost Doodnauth Lallbeharry for 4, caught and bowled by Ravi Narine with the score at 22-1 after 3 overs.
Foo arrived at the crease with the score on 28-2 in the 4th over and took charge, hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours in his 31 to see his team home.
Earlier in the day, Albion reached the finals after defeating Port Mourant by 8 wickets. Batting first after losing the toss, Port Mourant scored 97-5 with Hoomchand Pooran scoring 23 and Ravi Ivan 22.
Veerapen Permaul 3-14 and Devendra Bishu 2-22 were the leading bowlers for Albion who in response, lost Imran Khan early but Doodnauth Lallbeharry and Shastri Persaud repaired the damaged with some powerful hitting. Persaud was caught off national leg spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo for 24 at 68-2 in the 6th over.
West Indies middle order batsman Narsingh Deonarine then joined Lallbeharry to see Albion home. Lallbeharry remained on 32 while Deonarine was on 22 when Albion reached 100-2 in nine overs.
Albion took home $100,000 in cash and a similar amount in educational and hygiene kits as the top prize. RHT received $50,000 cash and the same amount in kits while the lone losing semi-finalist, Port Mourant, were presented with $15,000 and a box of hygiene kits. Veerasammy Permaul took home $10,000 for being adjudged man-of-the-finals.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony offered congratulations to Albion on their well deserved victory. He also stated that the Club had closed off their cricket development promotions for 2008 and would restart early in 2009 with six major cricket tournaments on the tables.
Foster also expressed gratitude to Ansa McAl and their CEO Ms. Beverley Harper and Marketing Manager Troy Cadogan for their sponsorship of the tournament.
