As Guyana joined the rest of the world in honouring the valiant soldiers of World Wars 1 and 11 who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during those periods, President Bharrat Jagdeo, other Government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Disciplined Services and civil society yesterday paid tribute to the heroes at the Cenotaph, located in the vicinity of the Bank of Guyana Building.
The event, which included the traditional wreath-laying ceremony, commenced at 8:00 hrs and saw the officials laying wreaths at the monument site while prayers were later said by representatives of the three major religions in the country. The National Anthem was then sung by the Disciplined Services and others in attendance.
The group of diplomats included representatives of the United Nations, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and ambassadors of various countries, including Venezuela, the United States of America, Britain, Suriname, Brazil and India. Members of Parliament, City Mayor Hamilton Green and the Scouts Association also took part in the event by laying wreaths at the monument, as scores of Guyanese brought their children out to witness the annual ceremony and march-past.
Making his customary remarks at the event, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Jagdeo, told the gathering that they were meeting again to remember the gallant men and women who ‘gave their lives in two World Wars’. “We are forever indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice to the cause of peace and freedom. We also recall with gratitude those who, through the years, have made similar personal sacrifices in the continued struggle for human dignity, social justice and freedom from all forms of oppression…” he said.
