St. George’s and South Ruimveldt win titles
Devor Stewart burst down the sideline evading numerous tackles before ending over the tryline to give St. George’s High a well deserved 5-0 win over Dolphin Secondary in the final of the Schools Rugby Championship which was played last Saturday, at the National Park.
In the other final that was contested, South Ruimveldt defeated Tutorial, also by a 5-0 margin through a try from Fabian Hall.
An exhibition match involving females from St. John’s College was also part of the day’s activities with Team 2 battling to a 5-0 triumph over Team 1 courtesy of a try by Brittany Fingal.
Organised by the Guyana Rugby Football Union in collaboration with the visiting New York Caribbean Cougars and Yamaha Caribs, the tournament brought together seven schools including St. John’s College, South Ruimveldt Secondary, Tutorial, Christ Church and Charlestown as part of the Union’s Future Development Programme geared at ensuring a continuous flow of players in the system.
Played in an atmosphere that resembled a regional tournament, the students entertained the fans with some exciting rugby despite their limited knowledge of the sport.
Among those present were GRFU President Noel Adonis, former national players Terry Braithwaite, Lloyd, Wilfred Neblett, Sylvan Underwood, George David and Maxwell Duesbury, parents, coaches Sherlock Solomon and Alton Agard, current nationals including respective captains Claudius Butts and Sabola Gray, who all played a part in the smooth running of the competition.
In the U-14 category, St. John’s placed third ahead of Tutorial.
