Indisciplined drivers on the western bank of the Demerara River are being blamed for the pandemonium that broke out yesterday afternoon on the Demerara Harbour Bridge following the closure for four hours.
Because of the nature of the works that had to be undertaken, the bridge was initially scheduled for closure from 13:00hrs to 15:00hrs.
However, unforeseen circumstances forced the work to continue until 16:45hrs, causing a lengthy line of vehicles to queue up to cross the river.
This seemed to agitate the drivers on the western end of the bridge, who started to get impatient and began clogging the approach road in a most disorderly manner.
When the bridge reopened, there was a mad rush to cross the river first.
Drivers on the eastern bank had to wait for hours until the errant drivers crossed.
When contacted yesterday, Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, corroborated this report, saying that based on information received, errant drivers caused the chaos yesterday at the Harbour Bridge.
When asked why the entity chose to effect repairs to the bridge during the middle of the day, rather than at night when the flow of traffic would have been significantly lower, Benn posited that it was done in an effort to ensure the safety of the workers.
He noted that the works were carried out above and below the bridge, and working at nights could have been hazardous.
