FORT CANJE, BERBICE – Residents of the Dharm Shala at Fort Canje got a mini-makeover recently, compliments of the members of the Guyanese Women in Development (GUYWID) organization in New Amsterdam.
The nine inmates were pampered by staff of Tessa’s Beauty Salon when they each received a manicure and pedicure. Some of the men had hair cuts, while the lone woman got her hair trimmed and styled.
According to Sharada Persaud, a member of the organization, this was GUYWID’s way of recognizing the contributions made by those of yester-year. “These persons have given so much to society, and now it’s society’s turn to give back to them; never mind that they may not be of high society standards, but yet they have contributed tremendously to our evergreen society.”
The residents were feted with goodies and were also treated to an afternoon of fun-filled activities.
The members of the Guyanese Women in Development threw out a challenge to other non-governmental organizations to reach out to the senior citizens, some of whom appear to be forgotten.
Asief Khan, the caretaker of the Dharm Shala, said that on special occasions persons visit, but still more is needed. “We need people to give whatever they could…in any form…We need mostly like dry goods and whatever else we can get to assist in making life more comfortable for these inmates.”
