Squires (96), McKenzie (5-13) top performers in latest roundBy Sean Devers
DCC all-rounder Denis Squires missed the competition’s third century by four runs while medium pacer Marc McKenzie (5-13) captured the first five-wicket haul in the competition and Troy Lewis became the first batsman to reach 200 runs in the latest round of action in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Busta 20/20 second division cricket competition yesterday.
Squires smashed a belligerent 96 as DCC reached 170-9 off 20 overs against Police at DCC in their match-up which commenced at 10:00hrs.
Roger Tendell had 3-21 for the Cops who fell for 167-5 in 20 overs with Jason Heyliger making 54 and Squires taking 2-27 with his off-spin.
At the Police ground, Marc McKenzie had 5-13 and got support from Travis Gittens (3-14) as TSC restricted Diplomats to 78-9. TSC then reached 79-5 in 13.1 overs as Extras top scored with 18 and Dwayne McPherson took 3-16 for Diplomats in another game which began at 10:00hrs.
At MSC, Ace Warriors upset GNIC by four wickets in their morning encounter after making 82-6 chasing GNIC’s 78 all out in 14.2 overs.
Cylus Gibson top scored with 33 as Dillon Azore (4-13), Rawle Enmore (3-16) and Orandel Douglas (2-0) did the damage with the ball for Ace Warriors.
Afzal Gafoor and Douglas hit 17 each to see their team to victory although Orlando Fraser took 3-17 for GNIC.
In the other game which began at 10:00 yesterday, Everest blew away GDF by 56 runs as Surendra Herilall and Ryan Rajmangal both scored 47 in Everest’s 175-4. Terry Fraser took 2-25 for the Soldiers who fell for 119 in 19.1 overs as Fraser (36) was the only batsman to reach double figures. Andrew Lovell had 2-39 for Everest.
And at DCC in a game which commenced at 14:00hrs, DCC reached 89-5 replying to Ace Warriors’ 88-7. Gafoor (29) and Enmore (23) offered some fight for Ace Warriors as off-spinners Squires (3-15) and Kevin George (2-9) did the damage with the ball for DCC. Squires retuned with the bat to slam 31 while Enmore took 3-30 in a losing cause.
In the afternoon game at MSC, GDF, without a pitch to practice on, turned up without a scorebook (which the players said was in the care of their Coach who was absent) and lost by six wickets to MSC.
Mark Haynes top scored with 27 as left-arm spinner Dennis Legay (4-17) captured his second four-wicket haul in two days and got assistance from leg-spinner Jermaine Joseph (2-21) as the Soldiers made 107-8 off 20 overs. Troy Lewis, one of two centurions in the tournament so far, made 26 while Danny Narayan (24*) and Delvon McEwen (18) supported for MSC who reached 108-4 in 19.5 overs.
At Eve Leary, GYO beat Police by 98 runs yesterday afternoon after making 204-7 and bowling out the home team for 106 in 16.4 overs.
Samuel Warde hit a pugnacious 56 while Anil Manickchand (34) and Vejai Gangaram (26) also batted well as Tendell took 2-47 for Police. Rawle Browne scored 42 as Jason De Silva grabbed 3-26 for the Woolford Avenue team.
In the other game played yesterday afternoon, Ace Warriors beat Diplomats at Everest but no details were available.
