The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will retain 29 cricketers for the next year.
This was the revelation made by CEO of the WICB, Dr. Donald Peters.
Currently the WICB and the West Indies Players Association, headed by former Test leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine, are currently finalizing details of the retainers and Peters said the board always had intentions of increasing the number of players on retainers and is in a position to do that now.
“We have stated all the way along that it is our plan to increase the number of players we have on retainers and we are going to do just that.”
Last year 15 players were placed on retainer contracts and that was trimmed to 14 after Jamaica batsman Marlon Samuels was banned for his alleged affair with a bookmaker.
Peters also revealed that among the 29 players to be retained will be some from the Under-19 age group, as well as players from territorial teams who are on the fringe of making the West Indies cricket team.
“We have decided to place a number of players from the territorial teams, as well as promising Under-19 cricketers, on retain in order to secure their future. “By placing these guys on retainer contracts we are giving them financial security, while they put their best efforts out to make the West Indies cricket team.
“These guys will know that they can concentrate on their cricket and get a salary at the end of the month. There are a number of fringe West Indies players out there and they don’t have the financial security to devote their time behind the development of their game, as they should.
“Hopefully, we are going to be able to help with their financial needs, as they concentrate on their cricket.
The WICB has always stated that as it becomes financially possible, they would increase the number of players on retainers and here it is the board is following through on that.”
Players on retainers will be graded into different levels and would be required to perform certain duties during the period under contract.
They would now be employed by the WICB and even if they are not actively involved in a cricket series, they would be required to complete certain assignments given to them in the contract.
