Dear Editor,
It has now been close to five months since residents of Fort Street, Kingston have been severely affected by shortage of water.
What is even alarming is that the situation has gotten even worse over the past week. We have not been getting water through our upstairs taps for the past four months, but we were getting all our water from a tap downstairs. Now, for the past week, we have been unable to access water even from that tap.
Allow me to give you a little scenario. ln my house, there are four adults and three school children. Now, everyone has to leave home at least by 8:30am daily. lt has now been one week since we have been leaving the downstairs tap on with a regular size tub.
That tap has been left on each and every night, and not once have we got up on any morning and found that tub filled. So, for the past week, seven persons have had to make do with less than one bucket {small} to bathe.
Whatever water is left must then be used for other sanitary purposes. Not to mention that we have been unable to do laundry for the week.
To add insult to injury, our last water bill came $2000 more than when we were getting full pressure, more than four months ago. lt has gotten so bad that we are not even sure whom to turn to for help.
We have asked an employee of GWI, about two weeks ago, what the problem was, and she said that the pipes are blocked and that they would send a team to look into it; but, up to now, nothing has been done. In the meantime, we are being billed more for the drips coming from the taps.
What is going on with this country? When will it end? When can we get to that stage when we can get up each day without having to worry whether we will be getting water {or blackout}? Can GWI please tell us when this will end?
Andres Atkinson
