Police & GNIC play to exciting tie as Butts’ clan grab seven wickets
By Sean Devers
Police pacer Troy Benn trapped Collis Butts leg before with GNIC needing one run to win to end their Pepsi first division 40-overs first division cricket contest at the Police ground in an exciting tie, while DCC beat GDF and Everest got past TSC as action in the competition continued in Georgetown yesterday.
The Butts’ clan of father Clyde and son Collis combined to take seven Police wickets as the Cops fell for 158 in 37.3 overs but the younger Butts could only manage one with the bat as his side were dismissed for 158 with 4.2 overs left in the contest.
Trevor Benn (29), Rawle Browne (27) and Reginald Rodrigues (24) all failed to build starts as Clyde Butts, a former Test off-spinner and present West Indies selector took 3-27 to support his off-spinning son Collis who had 4-29.
Former Guyana youth player Ejaz Mohamed (38), Shawn DeSouza (38) and national under-17 selectee Quency Ovid-Richardson (21) contributed with the bat for GNIC as Benn (3-25), Latchman Persaud (2-20), Vishal Jaigobin (2-28) and Browne (2-4) were the main wicket takers for the cops.
At DCC, the host pilled up the competition’s highest total when they made 320-6 in their 122-run win against GDF.
National player Chris Barnwell (86), Guyana under-19 opener Trevon Griffith (78), Jamal Hinkson (71) and Denis Squires (59) led DCC to their 300-plus total as left-arm spinner Clinton Collins (2-46) and Vanrick De Silva (2-34) bowled well for the soldiers who fell for 198 in 34 overs despite 81 from Anil Rambhajan. Squires had 3-20 and Barnwell 2-30 for DCC.
In the other game in the competition played yesterday, Everest beat TSC by 63 runs at Everest after making 259-5 and restricting TSC to 196-6 when their 40 overs expired.
Former Guyana under-19 opener Chris Patandin (66) out-of-favor Test opener Ryan Ramdass (62), Troy Gonsalves (55) and Rakesh Goberdhan (31*) batted well for the home team as leg spinner Travis Blyden took 3-40.
Blyden returned to make 48 but only Demerara all-rounder Kelon Carmichael (27) offered support as Sauid Drepaul had 3-30 and Gonsalves (2-43) for the Camp Road team.
