The gang which carried out Thursday’s daring $17.2M payroll heist at Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara managed to escape the Joint Services cordon after the police had descended on Nismes in the wake of the payroll heist.
The gang members were arrested in various locations, some far removed from the crime scene, having evaded the security forces. Some were found in West Demerara homes, some in vehicles preparing to return to the city, and some on the foreshore trying to reach the city. The reinforcement sent into the area by the Guyana Police Force made these arrests.
These gang members were able to stash the money and escape, but one of the wounded, who was captured crawling out of the bush, provided valuable information to the police.
The GEB security vehicle was transporting the Wales GuySuCo Estate payroll, at around 11:00 hrs on Thursday, when a silver-grey motor car blocked its path in the vicinity of Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara.
Nine men then surrounded the GEB vehicle and held the occupants at gunpoint.
After relieving the security guards of two 12-gauge shotguns and a.38 pistol, the bandits took over the GEB vehicle and made good their escape.
The vehicle was later found abandoned on the Nismes Old Road.
