Dear Editor,
The Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) is improving in the delivery of its services as letters from GFC critics are not plastered in the letter columns of our national newspapers as have been the trend a few months ago.
As an observant Guyanese, I truly believe that the GFC has improved its services significantly over the past year under the guidance of the Minister with responsibility for Forestry, Mr. Robert Persaud.
I recently witnessed a television programme highlighting the improvements in the Forestry Training Centre located at Manaka and also the expanded operations of the Barama Company Limited after being penalized for poor operations by the GFC on several occasions.
The GFC has been advocating over the years for sustainable management practices, which will benefit all stakeholders once the guidelines are followed.
It was amazing to see the significant investment being made in the forestry sector, yet some elements have been making claims of corruption and mismanagement of this invaluable resource.
Guyana’s Forestry Sector is vital to the world at large and I urge all the critics to do a more meaningful job by getting on board and join the President’s fight for Guyana to benefit from Carbon Credits.
There is a role for us as citizens of this country to support development despite our backgrounds. Our natural rainforest’s true potential will be realised in the coming years to mitigate climate change. Vivian Li
