Exciting matches anticipated as top teams battle for finals places
Its now crunch time and if the current trend continues, football fans can be assured of two more delightful days of football action when the semi-finals and the final get underway at the Tucville ground and the Providence Stadium, tonight and Sunday night, respectively.
In matches witnessed in the quarter-finals, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, through goals off the boots of Elton Brown, in the 40th minute and Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams in the 72nd , trounced Bakewell Buxton Stars 2-0 when play in the Namilco Football Festival continued at the Tucville Ground, Wednesday night last.
In the other quarter-final match played that night at the same venue, Camptown and Bakewell Topp XX necessitated extra time to determine a winner after ending regulation time nil all. Six minutes into the overtime session Dexter Mollyneaux powered a shot past the goalie and Camptown surged ahead 1-nil. Several botched chances by players from both sides ensured that the score remained unchanged.
Alpha United now plays Sunburst Campton in the semi-finals tonight in the first of two game, while host Fruta Conquerors and BK International, Western Tigers oppose each other to decide the teams playing in the finals scheduled for the National Stadium on Sunday night.
Alpha captained by Leon Grumble and fielding a formidable team that included Andrew Murray, Brown and Abrams, were never really tested and the slim victory margin was due to tactical blunders on their part, than the opposition’s strength.
Brown, who had registered Alpha’s first goal should have scored his second when he thundered down the right wing all by himself but botched the chance when his shot slammed into the crossbars and rebounded into play.
Andrew Murray then misplaced a shot when he was all alone on the right wing, raising the ire of his supporters.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Abrams playing on the left wing handed Brown a dolly of an opportunity with a perfect pass but once again, Brown made a mess of the opportunity.
Five minutes later the quintessential Abrams collected the ball inches from the touchline and raced down the right wing in what looked like a certain goal. He somehow managed to make a mess of the opportunity. His next chance occurred 17 minutes into the second half from a perfect cross off the boot of Quincy Madramootoo. This time he did not err.
Abrams was once again the star when he broke away from his markers and was well on his way to another goal when a bit of unfair play by the opposition forced the referee to call a foul. The subsequent free kick, taken by Harding failed to pass the opposition wall.
Tonight’s match against Alpha should provide the impetus to assess Camptown’s degree of improvement since in recent times they lost to this team in the Alpha Summer Festival KO competition at the Providence Stadium.
Alpha had also prevailed once again when the two teams met in the second round of the GFA Cellink Plus Premiere League at the Tucville Ground three weeks ago. An action packed double header is therefore envisaged.
