Western Dragons ‘A’ establish stranglehold on men’s 2nd Division
The Western Dragons ‘A’ have stamped their authority on the men’s second division competition by blasting previously unbeaten Old Fort with a 7-3 victory.
The two pool leaders met Wednesday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall as the GT&T National Indoor Championships resumed. Other Western Dragons teams failed to repeat the performance however as the Dragons ‘B’ went down by 3-1 to the Carib Degenerates and the Dragons ladies to GCC Tigers by virtue of a walkover.
Despite Old Fort being able to hold the match scoreless for most of the first half, the Western Dragons ‘A’ made their important breakthrough in its final minute when Jermain Murray found the back of the net and changed the momentum of the game.
The second half told a different tale as Dragons poured in 5 more unanswered goals before Old Fort could muster one of their own. Old Fort would manage two more in the half and Dragons one more in the one-sided affair that saw Dragons pull off the 7-3 win. Adrian Sampson top-scored for the Dragons with a hat-trick, teammate Deon Carew added a double while Jermain Murray and Trason Corbin each scored a single.
Tony Cole, John Abrams and Dwayne Allen each scored one for Old Fort.
Rawl Davson, Sheldon Corlette and Wendy Boodhoo each scored a goal for the Carib Degenerates on their way to a 3-1 victory against the Western Dragons ‘B’ in the other second division clash of the evening. At three goals down, the promising Donwes Austin would manage to pull back a consolation goal for the Dragons at the final buzzer.
Today’s first division games see the GCC A & B teams come up against each other while the more critical Old Fort and Hikers clash is likely to determine who will challenge GCC in the final.
Hikers ‘B’ play the Degenerates with third place bragging rights at stake while the Dragons ‘A’ and Old Fort ‘B’ seem unlikely to be challenged for their top two spots and the opportunity to contest the second division final.
Hikers ladies seem poised to draw even with the GCC Tigers and meet them in Sunday’s final if they can maintain their form and defeat the newcomers Western Dragons.
Matches continue today from 6:00pm as follows:
Hikers “B” vs Degenerates 2nd div 18:00
Dragons vs Hikers Ladies 19:00
Dragons-2 vs Old Fort “B” 2nd div 20:00
