The National Chess Championship is set to start this Saturday at the Ocean Spray International Hotel, 46 Stanley Place, Kitty, Georgetown.
The championships will be played in a Junior and Senior category. The tournament will be a double round robin. This allows each player to face his opponent twice, once with the white pieces and once with the black pieces.
Berbician Kriskal Persaud will be defending his title against seven of the strongest chess players in the country in the senior category. He will be joined by Ronuel Greenidge, Errol Tiwari, Loris Nathoo, David Khan, Dennis Dillon, Frankie Farley and Omar Sharif.
In the junior category, Ronald Roberts is ineligible to defend his title due to the age limit. The favorite to win among the juniors is Taffin Khan. He will be joined by Cecil Cox, Saeed Ali, Kana Khan, Khalid Gajraj, Rashad Hussain, Sham Khan and Devendra Singh.
The opening for the National Chess Championships is set for 13:00 hrs at the Ocean Spray. Round one is set to start at 1400 hrs.
The action then moves to the King’s Plaza Hotel, Main Street, Georgetown on Sunday with round two from 10:00 hrs and round three at 15:00 hrs. Time control for each game is three hours. Scoring is compulsory in algebraic notation for both categories.
