The winning team from the Harpy Eagles Martial Arts Academy attached to Apex Education display their hardware won at the tournament
The Harpy Eagles Martial Arts Academy (HEMAA) attached to the Apex Academy (HEMAA) scored 33 firsts 8 seconds and 7 thirds to upstage four other clubs when the curtains came down on the 3rd National Open Karate Championships staged at the Enmore Community Centre Building ECD, on Sunday October 26.
The HEMAA upstaged three other clubs-Great Diamond, Best of Sidekick Martial Arts Academy and hosts, Little Diamond, to cart off the lion’s share of the prizes at stake.
The Academy finished with 33 first places, 8 seconds and 7 thirds and accrued a total of 21 trophies and 29 medals to stamp their dominance in the competition.
Participants contested for prizes in the individual Kata, Kumite, Open Free Form, and Weapon Kata. Contestants also battled for supremacy in the Team Kumite Championship which was won by the HEMAA through the team efforts of Lester Lewis, Ryan Daniels, Ryan Beaton, Jamal John and Shaka Inniss.
Director of the HEMAA, Troy Bobb was elated by the team’s performance. He said that the members of the team were relatively young but worked hard to attain the end results.
He said it was apt reward for their efforts.
Trophies were presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers. The complete achievements of the HEMAA are: Hosea Gulliver and Kemo (3rd in Kata). Alex Yasseen (3rd in sparring), Lazaro (1st in Kata), Tamera Austin (2nd in Kata and sparring), Nicola McDonald (1st in sparring), Kendal Fraser (1st in Kata), 1st in Kata, Venita McDonald (1st in weapons, 2nd in sparring), Ricardo Thomas (1st in sparring), Jasaney Tyndall (1st in sparring), Ryan Beaton, Omesh Lalchand (1st in Kata, weapons and sparring).
Crystal Emmanuel (1st in Kata, weapons and sparring), Ryan Daniels (3rd in Kata, 1st in sparring) Steve Samuels (1st in Kata), Khadiya StClair (1st in Kata, 1st in sparring), Troy Bobb (1st in Kata, 1st in weapons, 1st in sparring), Dion Bobb (2nd in Kata, 2nd in weapons, 1st in sparring), Allende Barker ( 1st in weapons), Shaka Inniss (3rd in Kata and sparring, 1st in team sparring), Jamal John (1st in sparring, 1st in team sparring), Lester Lewis (2nd in Kata, 1st in team sparring), Bano Joseph (3rd in sparring), Rayon Lee(2nd in Kata, 2nd in weapons), Venicia Talbot (1st in Kata, 1st in sparring).
