The Demerara Oxygen Company Limited (DOCOL) yesterday commissioned a state-of-the-art $80M liquid propane gas (LPG) filling plant.
The facility which is located at the company’s head office in Eccles was commissioned by Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir, who was among the many dignitaries to grace the event.
Delivering a brief remark on the occasion, DOCOL’s Chief Executive Officer, Shameer Hoosein noted that the commissioning of the plant is among a number of achievements which all coincide with the company’s 60th anniversary.
He said that the facility has been the company’s project of pride for this year. Among other projects are the company’s conversion of the electricity supply from 50 kilohertz to 60 kilohertz and the linking of their two oxygen plants to produce simultaneously.
According to Hoosein, the commissioning of the plant can be seen as one of the company’s efforts to better the standard of living for Guyanese.
Hoosein announced that the plant in Berbice will soon be closed because the company will be supplying the area from the new plant in the city. This closure will occur once the Berbice River Bridge is completed.
This plant, Hoosein said, will also provide for a better price for retail Tex gas. He added that while the company continues to monitor the global financial crisis it will be working closely with the parent company to drop the price of gas.
Commenting on the company’s strict policy on health safety and security, Hoosein said that with the commissioning of the plant, DOCOL recently promulgated standards for the transport, storage and use of its products.
This, he said, was done in collaboration with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards. A call was also made to the relevant Minister to make the standard legal.
Apart from the new standard, the company, during the year, conducted several external audits. These included the LPG plant audit, industrial gas plant audit, electrical audit, one by the Ministry of Labour and another by the Guyana Fire Services.
Most remarkable was the company’s first ever environmental audit, which was done to ensure that the company is in keeping with the law and to ensure that the procedures have no negative impact on our environment.
Retail District Manager Eastern Caribbean-South-Chevron, Raymond Samuels, commended DOCOL for its achievements. He further pledged his company’s continued partnership for the further development of the local entity.
Minister Nadir also lauded the company’s efforts in the propane gas industry. He commended DOCOL for its safety practices and called on other companies to follow suit.
