– one must wait more than three months for next hearing
Theresa Jordan was yesterday denied pre-trial liberty, when she made her first court appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on a charge of having in her possession 271 grams of cannabis for the sole purpose of trafficking, on October 30.
She pleaded not guilty. She was represented by attorney at law Vic Puran who, in a bid to secure bail for his client, told the court that the “drugs” were found in a stall in Stabroek Market.
He added that the stall owner was released and his client is now being charged. The lawyer added that his client should not remain in custody when the drugs were not found in her possession. Puran said that since the stall owner was not arrested, this case has the prospect of no conviction.
However, Police Prosecutor Desiree Fowler, who objected to bail, told the court that under the section which the defendant is charged bail is not granted. She added that the police had a “sting” operation and she was seen “selling” the drugs.
Bail was refused and she is expected to make her next court appearance come February 2009.
GUN POSSESSION
IN DIAMOND
In the same court, Dankumarie Roopchand, of 11 Diamond Housing Scheme, was also denied bail when she appeared before Magistrate Octive-Hamilton. It is alleged that Roopchand had in her possession one flare gun without being the holder of a licence on October 23. She pleaded not guilty.
Roopchand was represented by attorney at law Mohamed Zafar, who in a bid to secure bail told the court that the gun was not found in his client’s possession.
Police Prosecutor Desiree Fowler said that bail should be denied because of the prevalence and seriousness of the matter. Bail was denied and the accused ordered to make her next court appearance on Monday at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
