– Deputy Registrar
November 24 is now being touted as the official opening date for the University of Guyana, Turkeyen campus, a week later than was initially offered as the tentative date.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the opening date announcement was made by the administration on Monday, following a meeting.
It was noted that the date initially proposed was pushed back due to cleaning works which were ongoing at the university.
Additionally, it was disclosed that registration and supplemental examinations will commence on November 10 and conclude on November 24, 2008.
However, Deputy Registrar Vincent Alexander, in an invited comment, said that the University will be releasing an official statement today.
It was revealed that the date for the culmination of the semester will be December 22 and the following semester will commence on January 5, 2009, as was previously reported.
This newspaper understands that the convocation activities will still be held on the second Saturday in the month of December.
The university’s convocation activities are usually timetabled in the normal academic calendar to take place at the end of the second week in November.
Due to the prolonged asbestos removal process which commenced on July 1, last, the entire operations of the university were transferred temporarily to the Dennis Irvine Hall of Residence, Goedverwagting, and at other locations.
It was, however, anticipated that the $200M process would have been completed within two months’ time rather than four months later.
The university buildings and surroundings were certified as safe for occupancy about two weeks ago and the relocation back to the campus had commenced last week.
